I Don't Have a Math/Science Brain...Yet!
When confronted with learning new technology or a difficult task, students do one of two things. Students with a growth mindset, see persistence, practice and hard work as key ingredients to reach their goal.  Students with a fixed mindset lose interest, withdraw, or give half hearted attempts. Growth mindset students believe FAIL represents First Attempt In Learning and see mistakes as learning opportunities. In this session participants will learn strategies to build a “Growth Mindset” in their students. Any grade level.

Language Dives: What are they and how deep can we go?
This session will focus on the use of Language Dives¹, a powerful inquiry-based strategy in which students analyze, comprehend, and use the language of meaningful academic sentences. It’s a simple but useful tool that’s easy to learn. By applying the engaging formula of deconstructing, reconstructing, and then practicing key sentences, students will strengthen their understanding of literary and informational texts as well as go deeper into literal and inferential thinking. They will activate and build prior knowledge and strengthen content vocabulary. We will also discuss the many different applications of the strategy across content areas. ¹The EL Education Language Dive is based on “Juicy Sentences”: Wong Fillmore, L., & Fillmore, C. (2012, January) “What does text complexity mean for English learners and language minority students?” Paper presented at the Understanding Language Conference, Stanford, CA.

Seeds of Hope: A Nebraska Loves Public Schools film
“If you can wish for anything, you can do it.”
Those words, from 2017 Omaha Northwest graduate Kalpana Gurung, come near the end of “Seeds of Hope”, the latest documentary from Nebraska Loves Public Schools. That message, one of hope, reverberates throughout the entirety of the moving, 35-minute exploration into the education of immigrant and refugee students and the adaptation to life in America that those students, and their families, face. The film is elegant, its subjects direct, genuine, endearing, and most importantly, real. “Seeds of Hope” is powerful, but because of its message, which isn’t built on persuasion or an overly-aggressive tug at the heart strings, but rather simple reality.Nebraska leads the nation in refugee resettlement, and since 2000 its public schools have seen a 113 percent increase in English Language Learner (ELL) students.

Socratic Seminars - Love Teaching Again!
Learning to Lead Socratic Seminars has changed the lives of teachers all over the world. This session is targeted to teachers who are looking for ways to engage even the most reticent students, enhance reading skills, improve classroom discussion, and challenge all students. After a good seminar, students not only leave the classroom excited about ideas that directly affect their lives, but they come back the next day asking for more. Seminars work well in all grade levels and subject areas. In Socratic Seminars, the leader and participants work together to understand what the author is saying, what words mean, and how the ideas discussed are significant to the lives of people today. Seminar participants gain life skills not only in critical reading and in speaking clearly, but also in listening to each others' views and considering evidence from different viewpoints. These are important skills schools can develop to help society return from what some call today’s “tribalist” culture. Materials for seminar discussions can include: primary sources, historical documents, literature, works of art, poetry, music and movies, as well as provocative writing in all subject areas, songs, speeches and essays, intriguing STEM problems and concepts, etc.
